Say what you will about Hank Haney’s comments leading up to the U.S. Women’s Open. Say the manner in which they were delivered was insensitive, which it was. Say someone who has gained considerable wealth and reputation as a golf expert should know better, and you’d get no argument.

But when you’re done sounding the alarm, when you’ve trotted out all the phobias and added the appropriate ists, be sure to say one other undeniable thing: He was spot on.

Memo to high-profile college golfers: Enjoy your summers while you can. Everything changes when you start playing for pay.

Golf’s roots are in the amateur game, in which competitors play for self, not money. The summer tournament circuit for accomplished amateurs, which begins in earnest this week with the men’s Dogwood Invitational at Druid Hills in Atlanta and the Women’s Southern Amateur at Lockwood Folly in Supply, N.C., still retains much of that quaintness.


Haney stands out in golf’s sea of happy talk
I’m a regular listener to the PGA Tour channel on Sirius XM radio, and Hank Haney’s show is my favorite (“If Haney feels remorse, next step is key,” May 30). Why? Because in the sea of “happy talk” promoting the PGA Tour, professional golfers, golf, and most of all, sponsors, sponsors, sponsors, Haney stands out as the one host most likely to present a critical viewpoint (as well as positive, when deserved).


Announced: By the PGA Tour, a new tournament to be played this fall in Bermuda. The Bermuda Championship was scheduled for Oct. 31-Nov. 3 at Port Royal Golf Course in Hamilton.



Number of years since a Canadian has won the Canadian Open, when Pat Fletcher prevailed in the 1954 edition. Adam Hadwin, who is No. 77 in the Official World Golf Ranking, will be the highest-ranked native son when the RBC Canadian Open begins Thursday at Hamilton (Ontario) Golf & Country Club.




Hawk & Rude: U.S. Open memories
Co-hosts John Hawkins and Jeff Rude recall some of their favorite national championships while adding some behind-the-scenes flavor to the mix.


Arkansas’ Maria Fassi repeated as the Annika Award winner, the Annika Foundation announced. Fassi, of Pachura, Mexico, completed her college career by winning the NCAA title.


Billy Casper Golf has pledged to support the Fifty for Father initiative by sponsoring rounds at many of its facilities nationwide. Pete Crozier will play 50 courses in 50 states in 50 days, to support diabetes research. Crozier’s father died of Type 2 diabetes, and his son is afflicted with Type 1 diabetes.


Global Value Commerce is celebrating next week’s U.S. Open with the Pebble Beach Bounty Contest, a product giveaway on Entry is through June 12, with winners to be announced June 17-21.


Cameron Smith will be wearing An Original Penguin by Munsingwear during next week’s U.S. Open. The manufacturer announced his daily attire for the tournament at Pebble Beach.


KemperSports will serve as a consultant for Mink Meadows Golf Club in Martha’s Vineyard, Mass. The nine-hole course dates to 1928.


Club Champion has expanded its training program for its club-fitting and -building services via Club Champion University. The four-week program includes classroom and fitting work at the company’s headquarters in Willowbrook, Ill.


Troon has been selected to manage Naperville (Ill.) Country Club in Chicago’s western suburbs. Troon, which is headquartered in Scottsdale, Ariz., recently opened an office in Chicago.


Buffalo Ridge Springs at Big Cedar Lodge has been named by Golfweek magazine as the top public-access course in Missouri. The course, in Ridgedale, Mo., topped Golfweek’s 2019 Best Courses You Can Play in Missouri list and also debuted on the magazine’s Top Courses You Can Play in America list, at No. 89.
