The second decade of the 21st century is approaching the 18th green, and like any extended measure of time, its scorecard features lots of circles and squares. From the swift validation of three budding superstars to all the can’t-miss kids who did, from long putters and flagsticks to Ryder Cup theatrics, the 2010s made a hasty exit from the Tiger Woods Expressway and wound up in a town full of bright ideas and fresh faces.

Not that it always has been the friendliest of places.



If Indy can test all cars, why can’t golf test all clubs?
Xander Schauffele was 100 percent correct when he challenged the R&A to test all drivers, not just a random selection of 30 (“From the Morning Read inbox,” July 22).

The Rules of Golf state that a player must use conforming clubs and balls. But how do players know whether their equipment is conforming? They have no way of testing. They actually depend on the equipment manufacturers to provide them with conforming equipment.



Early odds for favorite Brooks Koepka to win the 2020 Masters, according to Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook. Tiger Woods, the defending champion, was listed with Dustin Johnson as the co-No. 2 choices at 12-1.




Hawk & Rude: Open and shut at Portrush

Imperial Headwear has been named the official headwear of the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour’s 2019 Summer World Championship on Aug. 3-5 at Orange County National Golf Center in Winter Garden, Fla. The event will feature six divisions for boys and girls ages 8-18.


Youth on Course has added Bethpage State Park’s five golf courses to its roster of participating courses. Youth on Course is a nonprofit organization that provides youngsters with subsidized golf, college scholarships, paid internships and a caddie program.


National Golf Day will be held Wednesday, May 6 on Capitol Hill in Washington, according to We Are Golf, a coalition of the game’s leading associations and industry groups. The 13th annual event highlights golf’s economic, charitable, environmental and fitness benefits.


Troon has been selected to manage Brookstone Park in Derry, N.H., the management company announced. Brookstone Park features a nine-hole par-3 daily-fee course, lighted practice facility, 18-hole miniature course and indoor and outdoor events venues.


Nick Dougherty’s “Tee Time Tips” program, which has been featured on Sky Sports, will air this summer on Golf Channel, according to Lynx Golf, which sponsors Dougherty. In the show, Dougherty, a three-time winner on the European Tour, shares his advice on a variety of golf topics.


Gregg Blanchard, Inntopia’s senior vice president of strategy, points to Pelican Hill Golf Course’s email campaign as a “clever” marketing message. The key is to personalize the message.


Players wearing cleated golf shoes swept the four men’s major championships this year, according to PrideSports, which manufactures the Champ and Softspikes brands. The winner of the recent British Open wore Softspikes Pulsar cleats, the company said.


NBC Sports Group will televise nearly 50 hours of coverage over the next two weeks of women’s major championships. The network will broadcast from the Evian Championship this week in France, followed by next week’s AIG Women’s British Open in England.


Golftec has launched its annual August sale, providing a 20-percent discount for swing evaluations, lessons and club fittings. The sale is in place at all U.S. and Canadian centers.
